Compact Disc File System, or CDFS, is used in Windows 95 and later OS's, as a driver for accessing CD-ROM's. CDFS replaces MSCDEX, which was used for MS-DOS and Windows 3.x systems. Unlike MSCDEX, which is a 16-Bit program that runs only in Real Mode, CDFS is a 32-bit program that runs in Protected Mode. In addition, it uses the VCACHE driver to control the CD-ROM disk cache, which results in much smoother playback on lower-end systems.
CDFS is not an independent Filesystem. Instead it is a loosely-used alias for ISO 9660, the CD-ROM file system standard intended for making CD-ROMs readable by many different platforms.
