Overview

Red Hat, a distribution of Linux based on the Fedora core, is one of the most common distributions of Linux today, and can be found at many software retailers (e.g. Staples).

History

The project that came to be known as "Red Hat", was started in 1994 by Mark Ewing. The name "Red Hat" originates from its old, longer title "Red Hat Software Linux." This version, codenamed "Halloween" because its official date of release was on October 31, 1994, was the first of many to come. Red Hat, like many other versions of Linux, now incorperate eye-pleasing graphical user interfaces, and multitudes of excellent software.

The name 'Red Hat' is used for Red Hat's Enterprise-Grade Linux Systems, with a community-orientated version dubbed, "Fedora Core".
